When I got into work this morning I was greeted with a note from my Manager saying he needed to talk to me about the situation on Sunday with the parents, their son, and the hat I took back from him. He and the Veggie Tales kiosk vender told me that on Monday the family's grandmother showed up complaining about me. She said that she witnessed the entire event and apparently she flashed some sort of badge at my boss. Who the hell knows what she is. I doubt it's a cop but whatever. She flashed a badge and demanded corporate numbers and said she is going to try and get me fired. Just wonderful. Taurian, my Manager, asked me to write out a statement of what happened since the grandmother's version differs from my own. I just finished doing that and I'll post it below for those twisted enough to be interested.

The thing about this badge flashing grandmother that bothers me is that the mall was dead. It just opened and the only people there were mall walkers. Also, the Veggie Tales kiosk is right outside our store and the lady who runs it is always there. She has a direct view of where this grandmother would supposedly be standing watching all of this. Like me, she saw NO ONE THERE.

Ugh. I hate this situation and as I wrote in my statement below if this grandmother and family in general continue to harass me and cause problems I'll just resign and find another job. Honestly, this is just a gig to pay the bills until I get my Paralegal Certification so what do I care? It's not worth it. I mean, it isn't like selling hats is my life calling. Yeesh.

Anyway... here goes my statement:

Sunday 01/09/05 roughly around the time of 11 a.m. a couple and their son came into the store. I assisted the mother with her questions and rang her out for an adjustable pink Rams hat. While I was busy assisting them by answering her questions and then ringing out the purchase, their son wandered away from their eye line towards the right section of the store where College and 5950 hats reside. I observed him using my peripheral vision and at first, he was causing no harm. Simply running about, touching hats, putting them back, and so on.

During the transaction, I noticed he ran behind the blocked off area where the 5950 hats reside. Again, I thought nothing of it until I noticed some hats accidentally fell to the floor. He picked them up then ran to his parents. I had finished ringing the transaction and handed out the appropriate change, leading me to think they were heading out the door. I went around the cash wrap and asked the son for the hat. Admittedly, I do tend to mumble when I speak so it's possible he didn't hear me. However, at the time, I assumed he ignored what I said and I took the hat from him.

I went around the cash wrap with the hat in hand which is when the mother began to berate me for taking the hat back. She said I had made her some uncomfortable by doing this and then demanded I refund her money. I voided the transaction and returned her money and apologized as best I could for the wrong they perceived I had committed against them. Perhaps I did not do enough but I was honestly confused as I felt I had not done anything wrong. The mother said rather strongly that I should be sorry and left the store, I handed the refunded money to the father and he then left.

Later that day I called my Manager, Taurian Tanner, and informed him of the situation. Through him and other mall workers, I have been recently told a grandmother witnessed this event by standing or sitting outside of our store. I did not see anyone outside during this time and another mall worker who would clearly notice such a thing has verified that there was no one there. In fact, the mall was nearly empty of customers as it had only just opened and the few people there were the exiting mall walkers.

If I committed any wrong doing in this situation I do apologize but I feel that isn't the case. Should this situation escalate to a serious corporate level I will resign my position to ease any tensions.

What a crock of bullshit, huh? I swear I'm cursed. Ah well. At least I'm going into the field of law and I know thanks to my classes legally I did nothing wrong. If I wanted, I could probably sue if Lids tries to fire me over this but you know I don't care enough. I rather just resign and find another job. Lord knows I've had enough offers. Anyway, back to paying attention to Litigation class.
