For no particular reason I rewatched episode 304 of The L Word and unlike my first viewing, I paid actual attention to the kiss Lard has after Dana wins the tournament. Upon watching the kiss as it continued to go on I found myself coming to the sad conclusion that Dana is no longer in love with Alice. I know that's probably not a shock to most people but as someone who absolutely adores the Danish relationship I sort of clung to this weird belief that Dana still does love Alice deep, deep, deep down in her heart and she just hasn't realized those feelings have remained there.
But that's not the fucking case. At least, it's not the case for me anymore. I honestly do think that Dana is in love with Lara. When she leaves in episode 307 I believe the storyline won't be about giving Danish as a romantic couple closure but instead Danish as best friends closure. Something that just fucking sucks because other than that kiss Lard has in episode 304 there has been almost zero romantic chemistry for them in this season. And what chemistry they do have is nowhere close to what Danish had as a brand new couple in S2.
All the same, it's hard for me to truly appreciate the chemistry Danish shares after accepting the fact that Dana is now in love with Lara. I really don't want to be a part of the insane breed of fanfic writers who blatantly ignore the obvious plot points and outcomes just because I don't like it. Then go on to write these disgustingly steeped in denial tales which place their couple as this Holy Grail ship or something. I dunno if I'm explaining this right.
I think the easiest comparison I can make is the Buffy/Willow shippers from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Although the Bianca/Maggie fans from All My Children are equally as insane. But for now I'd rather just talk about the fucking Billowers. That's not the "official" Buffy/Willow ship name but it's what I call them. Mostly because it sounds stupid and that's sort of what I think about this particular romantic pairing. Anyway. When Tara first appeared on the show and started her romance with Willow she got utterly vilified by the Billow fans. Nothing about Tara was too small for them to mock. From her stutter to her hair style to her shawl wearing hippie clothing. They all were subject of much scorn and derision from the Billow ranks while they continued to ignore all the mounting evidence that Willow was completely in love with Tara and never really displayed even crush tendencies in regards to Buffy.
The Danish fans certainly haven't gone to that level of insult in regards to Lara but I do believe we're steeped in denial about Dana secretly still being in love with Alice. Most of us probably know that's not the fucking case but that's what we want and so we cling to that dream or some shit like that.
Bah. I really do overanalyze this crap, don't I? It's like I'm a fucking fandom intellectual. My god, I'm so very sad. lol.
