Mini Review: King Kong

I've finally watched Peter Jackson's King Kong and the one word description for it has to be beautiful. It's such a fucking gloriously beautiful film. The way it was shot, the backgrounds, the costume design, the characters, and most of all Naomi Watts as Ann Darrow, the object of Kong's affections are all utterly beautiful. I'm not really a huge fan of the original King Kong or the crappy 1980's remake which is why despite loving Peter Jackson's work in LOTR I never rushed out to see King Kong in the theaters. Big fucking mistake on my part.

Naomi Watts was pretty in the other films she's done but Jackson makes her look like an ethereal goddess in this film at certain points. And the relationship between Ann and Kong is heart breaking and so very sweet. Those final few moments of happiness and quiet rest they have together before his death are what make the end of the movie depressing and tragic.

I really have no major analyzing to do here. Being a stupid fangirl I just wanted to do a short blurb on how fucking beautiful I found this film and Naomi Watts and Andy Serkis in their roles. Plus the standard statement for most fantasy movie geeks:

Peter Jackson rules all!

I loved their little five-minute scene in Central Park together, where you could almost forget the tanks and planes were going to show up any minute.

And that the big romantic moment between Watts and Brody didn't have to happen.

And that they REALLY emphasized a lot more than the original did, that Jack Black's character is a fanatical, self-obsessed asshole. Like, "Hell-O! All your fault, dickhead!"

I was a bit disappointed that Billy Elliott vanished from the picture as soon as they got back to NYC. And that, once again, the black guy dies.

But Naomi rocked. As usual. And where was the drive to nominate Kong for Best Actor? I think there should have been one.

Sincerely, Allaine

I have seen it when it came out, so my memory is not fresh at all, but what stuck was that Naomi Watts was beautiful, and that the planes were like the little toys you can get in those kinder surprise eggs.
I thought the dinosaurs or those creepy mud creatures / spiders (I really have no idea what they were) were a bit too much, but whatever.
and I got all choked up when King Kong died.
