Ahhh, teen romance. Sometime it's really fucking horribly annoying to watch on television and sometimes it's really horribly addictive to watch and South of Nowhere with their fabulous babydykes in love storyline is definitely in the latter with me right now. Actually, I'm surprised at how much I really like the show. It's well written and the characters are actually likable.

Which is a plus for a soap opera type program.

Anyway! The romance is between Spencer and Ashley and their storyline is one of three on the show. The show has its main storylines focused around the kids in the Carlin family who just moved to LA from a small town Ohio. Glen's storyline is about him becoming the big man on campus as he turns into one of the best players on the high school basketball team, Clay's storyline is about him finally having to deal with his identity of being the adopted black son in a white family, and Spencer's storyline is the whole discovering her sexuality thing and I find the show to be a refreshingly sweet and fairly believable drama thus far. I really really really like the character of Ashley who is being set up as Spencer's love interest on the show.

Ashley is the daughter of what appears to be a popular old school metal music rock star and while her father honestly does appear to love her he also basically ignores her because he's always on tour and never physically around. Her mother has been married four times and is working on the fifth and whenever she's in a position to choose between her men and her daughter she consistently picks whoever her current male love interest is. I have to admit, per usual I like the secondary love interest character more than the main character in this particular romantic ship but that's usually how it goes with me. But Ashley is just really so huggy. She's searching for love and acceptance and she's just really adorable around Spencer who despite having religious goody goody parents somehow isn't irritating to me. Her family is sickeningly nice on the surface though. I only say on the surface because of the way Spencer's mother, Paula, is being portrayed thus far.

Paula manages to amuse yet anger me because the woman is super nice on the outside but she's holding back this obvious level of sexual orientation bigotry inside. She's already starting to freak out just at the concept of Spencer having a lesbian friend in Ashley so who knows what will happen when she finds out that her daughter is a lesbian also and one that is in love with Ashley, a girl that she disapproves of from the first moment that she hears about her existence. In the third episode Spencer accidentally ends up on a date with this skeezy chick Kelly who invites Spencer out to a club with her. Ashley spends the whole episode telling Spencer that Kelly is bad news and she shouldn't go on a date with her and Spencer is like no no no no it isn't a date they're going on but hah yes, yes, it turns out to very much be a date. In the same episode Glen hears through the gossip mill that Ashley is gay, she's actually bisexual and she tells Spencer this in the first episode, and then he blabs about this over dinner. This freaks Paula out and she tells Spencer maybe she shouldn't be friends with Ashley anymore and because of this her dad, Arthur, who is a counselor or something, tells his wife that a person's sexuality shouldn't matter when it comes to choosing who is your friend. Paula then talks creepy sincerely about how they should then be praying for Ashley to find her way in life and stop "experimenting" before it kills her. And this makes Spencer look all... annoyed disgusted with her in the process. Hee. I giggled at Spencer's expression so much in this scene.

There's another scene later where Paula comes into her daughter's bedroom when Spencer is changing for her in denial not a date but really is a date with Kelly and finds Spencer walking around in just her bra and a skirt and Ashley is sitting on her bed reading a magazine. Paula proceeds to subtly freak out that her daughter has been in a room alone and half naked with a maybe lesbian. lol. It so amuses me. In that same episode, Ashley is playing Scrabble with Clay and proceeds to horrify Paula again by jumping up and doing a little dance when she gets a triple word score or something for spelling out the word herpes. Bwahahaha. Ashley! I love you. You're hilarious.

South of Nowhere is a surprisingly good and pretty decent teen type drama and from all the promotional videos and clips, my avatar is from one such promo, that they've been showing on the network it seems that Spencer and Ashley will definitely hook up. And thus I have a new ship and entertainment basis! Whee. Here's some links for those curious about the show...

Definitely check out their Pictures and Videos section on the official site. It has tons of great clips for Spencer and Ashley.
