I've decided to lazily repost my review of Labia Majora the first episode of Season 3 for The L Word from MediaBlvd. It's really fucking long but you all should be used to how I babble by now. I might be doing this for the rest of the season if my interest retains and people don't hate me for it.
Oh yeah, before I do the repost and before I forget those of you who need to download this episode since you're overseas or don't have cable or whatever you can find this episode already available on mininova here:
http://www.mininova.org/tor/194934
But again, you need to download the bittorrent program from their website for this to work. Whee. I'm now done doing my technically illegal links but hell, that's all I do here isn't it? Look at all my music links. Anyway, onto the lame repost from MediaBlvd that I'm sure no one is excited about. lol.
REPOST STARTS HERE:
I was expecting to like three things in this episode and they were Alice, Helacious, and Jenny/Moira. I ended up loving those three things instead of liking them and really enjoying Sharmen as a naturally adorable couple. I like to focus on the good instead of the bad, that's just how my personality works so this post is just about mostly what I liked in this episode. WARNING:This post will most likely be needlessly super long since I tend to ramble. So I'll apologize for that right now. lol. I babble. It's a problem.
Alice is my favorite character on the show and as long as she's on the show I'll watch it. That being the case I wasn't too pleased about the news of her downward spiral mentally in this season. The opening scene on the radio was just as wonderful and touching as in the preview. And I'll just randomly say that as a nerdy music fan it was so great to hear So Jealous by Tegan and Sara getting played twice in the show because I love them to death. That opening scene with her was just wonderful but her next appearance... okay. This scene was good and bad for one reason. It was well done in what it meant to express but what it expressed was just really sad.
The scene in The Planet has Lara subtly replacing Alice as Dana's love interest and perhaps as a member of the family circle and it hurts because it's so damn natural. Lara fit perfectly onto Dana's arm in that moment and I hated to say that as a Danish fan I found her funny and I did chuckle when she said she liked the word cunt. I by no means want Lard as a couple but I will say now I can't ever hate or dislike Lara. She's harmless and cute and a sweet person. Anyway. As basically a hardcore Alice fan that scene was painful because the group had this wonderful humorous and comfortable interaction and Alice was usually always the center of that before. Then suddenly that all ends because of her appearance. Which is just so wrong to me on so many levels but that's the point of the scene. That Alice is falling apart and she's not acting like the Alice we know and love and this is the result... that she's making her friends uncomfortable and she's sort of causing this disruption in the way they're all getting along. But at the same time, asking questions about her medication and what she's on now doesn't help at all. It's surface concern and doesn't do any good in terms of staving Alice's behavior and actually helping her.
Helacious is sort of my pet ship and what I'm adoring the most right now. Their interaction was hilarious and sweet and just gives me a lot of hope for their friendship and otherwise as the series goes on. Hopefully IC will continue to develop the Helacious friendship as the season goes on and doesn't simply let it drop off and die as other more significant plots arise. Yoga and Helena's slow recollection of the psychic's description of her love interest were really just adorable and hilarious and I found it really charming that she's so willing to sort of go for it and believe in things like that or at least give it a chance. Since I love Alice her crying did get to me but damn, why does Leisha make everything so funny? She made me laugh at the crying which I know was what she was supposed to do but as an Alice fan I did not want to laugh. Curse her! But I couldn't help it, that pan of Helacious sinking down and out of the camera's view as she cried? It was funny and I laughed and damn Leisha and her comic genius for that.
Pointless complaint: I could've done without the yellow barrette. It was odd and distracted me.
Something I expected to hate was the car chase scene. While I dislike it on principal because I think it's a lame idea for a scene and as a motorcycle driver I shuddered at the idea of being on the road near Danish when they were doing this. I could've died if I had. but I wasn't. I was safe in the Midwest and they're fictional. So, you know, wheeeee about that. lol. Moving on! The car chase wasn't as bad as I thought because it happened on accident. Alice didn't mean to follow Dana or to stalk her. She just happened to see her and she tried to get Dana's attention in a fairly normal way at first then Dana proceeded to ignore her. Personally, I think that's what is causing Alice's crazy behavior, along with all those medications. It's the fact that Dana is not dealing with Alice. She's ignoring her and basically dismissing her which is not something that is going to work in terms of Alice's character. Lenore and her family dismissed and ignores her. Alice is a fairly insecure person and Dana adding to that insecurity and adding some irrational anger to it by avoiding. I know that in Dana's defense avoiding is her m.o. but that's still the reason for Alice's behavior I think.
Random remark: I find it really telling about Helena, even though she was cut off from actually saying it by Alice, she was the only one in this episode to try to tell Alice to maybe stop dosing herself up on all those medications. Also how great was her offer to help Alice start dating again? I love them as friends. They're just sweet and cute together.
The car chase happening naturally made it not as bad but I what surprised me is how much I loved the Helacious interaction towards the end of it. I'm sorry but I loved Helena being so cute excited and calling Alice first to tell her she bought the movie studio and as a sort of pervy note I loved her totally big pimping outfit consisting of the white string bikini, faux fur, and seventies style sunglasses. I was hoping she would be calling Alice on the phone when I saw those pix and lo and behold she is! Fangirl noise of stupid joy! lol. I loved that phone call and then Alice's casual remark of losing Dana and then her hilarious analyzation about what her real hair color is. Again, I find it so cute that Helena is getting into the idea that Alice is the woman the psychic is talking about. To me it says a lot about how good Helacious interacts that this is a scene I really did loathe from the second I heard about it in spoilers and they made me really enjoy the last portion of it.
Jenny/Moira was something I wanted to like and when I first heard DS interviewed her voice bothered me but I actually really loved her with Mia in this episode. I think they work very well as a couple and I'm really looking forward to seeing more scenes with them. Do they have a ship name yet? lol. I don't think I can analyze them right now because I'm fixated on Alice and Helacious but I wanted to say I really did enjoy them separately and as a couple.
Sharmen is the same, I can't really say too much on them but they were adorable and I was super pleased to see how they worked so naturally as a couple. It's great for Shane who is truly such a very kind person. I'm really glad to see her so happy with Carmen and I was worried about Carmen's closeted family storyline in terms of it being a repeat of Dana's but it isn't. When Carmen was explaining about how it just isn't talked about I just stared wide eyed at the TV because that's exactly how it is in my family. I mean, I'm white not Mexican but my family is really strict Catholic and everyone knows I'm a lesbian, I brought my gfs home for holidays and otherwise but we just don't talk about how I'm gay. Which is fine because if I was straight I doubt I'd be discussing it with my parents. Anyway. That line and the interaction with Carmen's family totally showed how her storyline is going to be leagues different than Dana's. I hope that unlike Dana and her coming out Carmen gets more attention in terms of developing this particular plot point because it has a lot of potential. And wow. I sort of said a lot didn't I? lol. Babbling symptom again.
Peeping and the shrine then cardboard Dana standee scenes were again a case of me thinking they would be truly painfully bad and it not being quite so horrible as my imagination. The peeping was fairly low key and over quickly. I hate it on principal again because it's lame for Alice to be peeping on Lard. Just really lame. But it was over quickly so that was good. The shrine and having the cardboard Dana standee was again something I hate on principal. I will say that one of the best scenes to me was So Jealous being played again and us seeing the shrine and then the cardboard Dana standee. I really do want an animated avatar of Alice whapping the standee and saying, "What're you looking at?" It was a funny but sad sort of poignant scene to me.
Kit has menopause... dude, thank god! lol. I was afraid for her. I'm happy it was basically nothing bad per se and all is well in Kit land. She's such a great part of the show and I now end this ramble and babble filled post by saying that I adored the sweetness and the humor in the final scene.
