Yesterday my brother and I spent the entire day together. First we went out for a late lunch and basically hung out and talked until one p.m. then we headed over to Dave & Busters where I used to bartend, the Maryland Heights location, and played video games until four p.m.
Then we went to our true destination for the night. Ozzfest! Technically it opens at like ten a.m. but my brother and I only wanted to see the main acts which start at five o'clock. The show was at UMB Bank Pavilion which is literally down the same street so we had plenty of time when we drove over.
We found our seats and settled in to watch the first act on the main stage, Dragonforce, which is a speed metal band from the UK. They were really fucking great and for some reason my brother totally thought they had anime style music. I do agree the song they ended with seems like something that could be the opening theme to an anime series.
Especially a sword and sorcery show. They were super impressive with the guitar skills though and were without a doubt the fastest band at the show. Here's the song my brother liked and felt was very much in the style of an anime theme song.

When they were done playing we both gave into the fucking sweltering heat and decided we needed drinks. As we wandered over to the drink stand we both contemplated the fucking atrocity that is fat and hairy guys and their need to take off their shirts at outdoor concerts. I mean, dude, it was hella hot. 95 degrees and I get the impulse but come on! Do you not care you have fat rolls and a hairy ass back? It's gross! And there are food stands! It's not hygenic! But we got our drinks and were back in time for the start of Lacuna Coil.
I was super happy about getting to see Lacuna Coil live. I have heard some of their music but not a lot and man, do they give a great live show. What was particularly cool and cute was the fact that Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro who do the vocals in a brilliant mesh of haunting female and hard male singing were dressed in these identical black and white school girl/boy outfits.
Right down to the matching black ties. Cute! lol. I like them so much I'm currently using Cristina for my avatar in this post and I've already bought two albums on iTunes for them. I'm listening to Karmacode as I type and thus far I like each and every song I've heard. This is one kick ass Italian band, people. I totally endorse them.
What won me over completely and made me a big time fangirl was their excellent cover of Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode. They also did the best live performance of Our Truth where Cristina had so much head banging and circular hair flinging it was crazy. Plus she was jumping all over the stage, leaning into the audience, basically being a true musical badass. They were seriously so great. Here are my two favorite songs from their performance. I'm also linking the music videos for the songs just to be a sad nerd because you honestly must take a look at Cristina if you haven't seen her before. She's painfully hot in a yummy bad ass rock chick way.

After Lacuna Coil was a band called Hatebreed and I won't be linking any tracks for them because I thought they honestly sucked. The lead singer kept giving these douchey monologues about each song before they played it. Stuff like, "This song is for all the people who were ever abused as children. I think people who molest kids should rot in hell!" And, "I wrote this for anyone who is physically disabled and feels different." My favorite was how he ended their set, "I know people think we're negative but we're not. Our songs are messages of hope."
Dude! Fucking get a grip. Your band is called HATEBREED. How seriously hopeful can your asses be? Accept what you are! Ugh. Plus he kept going on about how they're representing underground metal. I was so happy to be going to Ozzfest since it's been awhile since I've gone to a true kick ass rock concert but man, these guys sucked and reminded me why I sort of hate metal on a lot of levels. Fucking preachy bullshit sometimes. Blerh.
Anyway! I don't endorse Hatebreed. Not only was their lead singer douchey I couldn't understand half their lyrics. They suffered from that mumbling screaming your head off syndrome a lot of metal bands have. I hate that shit. It makes it seem like all metal sounds the same and it doesn't.
Next up was Disturbed and they were another band that I knew quite a few songs from but not their entire playlist. My brother is a big fan though and has two of their albums and has already given them to me to rip. I honestly want to see them on their own without a tour because they gave the most audience involved awesome live show out of all the artists. They even managed to get my brother up and out of his seat which was fantastic for me since he's so reserved that it's almost not entirely fun to go to live music shows with him, you know? I mean, I like seeing music with people who are as into as I am and I love my brother and I know he digs all these bands but it was hard to tell that with him sitting in his seat with his arms folded over his chest.
But yay for Disturbed because they got my baby bro up and out of his seat. lol. They did so many kick ass songs but my favorites were, naturally, their cover of Land Of Confusion by Genesis and Stricken. Land Of Confusion was excellent because the entire audience was singing along to the chorus and I have to say David Draiman has total control over an audience. He fucking commands the stage and gets people to do what he wants. The guy has some serious power behind his voice and presence and that's so great to watch onstage. Particularly with metal.
They gave such a great live show that I turned into a total fangirl of them as well. I think Lacuna Coil and Disturbed were excellent examples of bands that can totally convert you to a fan with a great live show. Which is something that I really and truly appreciate as a huge music geek who loves going to shows. Per usual here are my favorite songs from their set.

Last but not least was System Of A Down. With System their music is a show in itself. I totally agree with the review I read once that said they are the Gilbert & Sullivan of metal music. They have an utterly unique sound that cannot be replicated and there is this delightful insanity to their lyrics that you can't help but fall in love with. That being said, they must have something against being projected on the big televisions because unlike all the other bands they showed images of abstract paintings that were their part of their stage backdrop which changed with each song.
It didn't matter too much to me since we had center seats close enough to see the band, Row PP 120/121, but it totally sucks ass for the people in the lawn seats. Again, I do believe System's music is a show in itself but it sucks that the people in the lawn seats couldn't see them on the stage and missed Serj Tankian do his funny shuffle side to side and spin in a circle dance.
What was fantastic about System was how they timed the lights perfectly to the beat of their songs. This was particularly evident in their performances of Boom! and Violent Pornography.
Boom! was brilliant in the way the lights were set up because the song starts with Shavo Odadjian doing the monologue and then when it gets to the, "Boom, boom, boom!" chorus the lights flare up and practically blind you but you don't fucking care because the music is just encompassing you and then you get Serj singing in that long and drawn out way he can employ whenever he appears to feel like it. Violent Pornography did a great job with the lights as well but Shavo was just utterly hilarious with his super fast rendition of the lyrics, "Everybody, everybody, everybody livin now. Everybody, everybody, everybody fucks. Everybody, everybody, everybody livin now. Everybody, everybody, everybody sucks."
Ah, I love that song. It makes me giggle and sing along each time I hear it. That's quality music.
What was a nice change of pace during all of this fast and hard metal was Lonely Day which is one of System's slower songs that still reflects Serj's range in vocals wonderfully. It was also the only song that didn't employ crazy ass lights and instead had people holding up lighters and cell phones. System gave a truly kick ass show and deserved to be the last act of the evening and much like Disturbed I'm really wanting to see them on their own tour next time because I'm sure they'd have the most elaborate stage show I've seen in awhile. Even if they don't like themselves to be projected on the big screens. And to be predictable here are my favorite System songs during the live show.

Getting out after the show was the usual parking lot no one is fucking moving anywhere traffic. During the insanely crowded and somewhat stinky walk to the car one guy kept shouting motherfucker over and over for no particular reason and it irritated me enough for me to shout back, "Don't you know any other cuss words besides motherfucker?!"
He didn't respond wherever he was and I shouted, "No?! I'll help you then! Shitface, cocksucker, asshole!" This caused much laughing around me and other people adding their own cuss words to the suggestion shouting and then it died off and sure enough, five minutes later the dude, wherever the hell he was hiding, went back to shouting motherfucker over and over.
That's the kind of stuff that makes me stay away from metal shows a lot. Well, that and the shirtless fat and hairy guys who insist on doing weird side to side metal dances and doing what they think is hard core white boy style rapping along to the lyrics of their favorite songs. But it's difficult to look hard core when you don't have a shirt on, you have fat rolls constantly jiggling when you do your rap dance, have a super hairy back, and wear ghetto ripped up blue jean shorts which are hanging low enough on your butt to show your raggedy boxer shorts.
Sorry for those images. I just had to share some of my pain. lol. But despite that it was a truly kick ass show and I had much fun with my unfortunately mostly reserved behaving at concerts brother. Plus I have new bands to be a fangirl about! I love that shit.
