I'm on disc two of Season Seven of Star Trek Voyager, the final season of the show, and when I finish I plan to start plotting a fanfic for the series with Janeway/Seven as the main couple. I'll follow canon and have it occur after the series finale hence my single mindedness to write it only after I've watched every single episode of the series. Not that it's been a trial, I have plenty of free time and I love the show.
In particular I love Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway which is odd since I don't tend to get crushes on the older female characters on shows. Not that I go for the jail bait... but... errr. What am I saying? Janeway is less blatantly sexual than I usually tend to get fangirl crushes on in terms of fictional characters. A lot of the characters I like on shows like Faith for BTVS, Alice for The L Word, Barbara Gordon for Birds of Prey, have a pretty evident sexuality and sensuality to them. Janeway is an extremely restrained character in the show and then when they do show her sexually on purpose, like with Michael Sullivan in Fair Haven and Spirit Folk it only serves to disturb me. Then again, they had her done up in that awful hairbun and old timey dress. Blerh.
The complexity is why Janeway rocks as a character though. She has so many variances to her personality that makes her entertaining to watch. Honestly, I love her humorous scenes the most other than the moments where she's all bad ass in saving her ship. Which leads me to my favorite Janeway characteristic which is so fucking slashy and is probably why most people love to ship her with Seven of Nine.
Janeway is such a Captain Save-A-Ho when it comes to Seven.
Seriously! Lets count the ways she's saved Seven throughout the series or has gone through insane attempts to save her even if she wasn't the one eventually to help her precious Borg. First there's the separation from the Borg originally, mentoring her in humanity, defense of her when she thought Seven's memory had been altered by a trader, helping her when the assimilated personalities were taking her over, saving her personally from the Borg Queen in the heart of the Borg cube capital, going super nutty almost torture style to rescue her from Captain Ransom on the Equinox, rescue from the Tsunkatse tournament, going after her when she left the ship all conspiracy theory crazy, getting assimilated to help Seven's Borgs In Dreamland boyfriend, rooting through dead drones and willing to kill live ones to get Seven a new cortical node, and finally her future self going back in time to prevent Seven from dying.
Such fucking evidence of Captain Save-A-Ho behavior. lol. It's great though. Seven is equally protective about Janeway but it amuses me that a lot of Janeway's actions once Seven comes on board involves her saving the younger woman. It's adorable in a strange way and I naturally had to make an icon displaying it.
I think I have maybe three chapters at the most of my Harry Potter fanfic left. Once I finish it I really want to start work on the Voyager fanfic which I think will be fairly different from a lot of the stuff I've read out there. Mainly in the fact I don't plan on having any sort of starship aspects to it. They remain various planets bound throughout the fic and Janeway is on a voluntary leave of absence from Starfleet during the fic.
My idea for it is to basically write about how Janeway has been under the stress of constant command for seven years in a hostile environment, having to keep herself emotionally separate and at a distance because of her position as Captain and it's really worn on her. Enough that she feels she's lost who she really is as a person to the mantle of command. After all the debriefings and speeches are through all she wants to do is try and find the person she lost out in the Delta Quadrant. During this time Seven finds she misses Janeway terribly and comes to find her and she ends up going along with Janeway on her journey of self discovery. It's going to be a very mellow and slow romance developing fic. Very character driven which is my admittedly favorite thing to do fic wise.
I've already got the title for the fic picked out. I'm going to call it Untethered which Microsoft Word insists isn't a word despite Dictionary.com telling me the definition is to release or free from a tether. The title comes from the song Prelude (On Earth As In Heaven) by Globus and if you click on that link I just provided you can hear it for yourself. I really love Globus and I think the lyrics suit Janeway and Seven's relationship as well as the general plot of my fic.
Plus it's just a damn pretty song. Anyway. End ramblings!
