As another seems to be setting sail. For those of you who aren't obsessed with forty one year old soap operas, on All My Children their lesbian heroine, Bianca Montgomery, is currently in the process of divorcing her wife Reese Williams. Ever since Bianca's recast, which was eight or nine months ago, and return to town her relationship with Reese has been reduced to long distance phone calls and elusions that their break up was in the works.
Well, now it's finally happening.
To be honest, I hate to disappoint any hardcore Bianca/Reese fans but maybe as a symptom of being a longtime soap opera fan or just a whore for romance I don't have much couple loyalty. Certainly I have favorite characters but overall I'm not the type to be upset if a couple I like breaks up. Eventually they'll get back together or another just as interesting and good couple will replace it.
I will say I'm a bit disappointed they went the route of a custody battle for AMC because it doesn't make much sense and custody battles on soaps are rarely done well or made in the slightest bit interesting. Bianca, without question, is my favorite character on AMC so of course I'm on her side with all this.
Most recently Reese sent her French lawyer to take custody of the girls for a "vacation" claiming she couldn't come to Pine Valley because of work so she sent a nanny since she didn't want Bianca to come with the girls. Since the start of the divorce storyline her attorney, Marissa Tasker (the daughter of Dr. David Hayward and Krystal Carey and the long lost twin sister of Babe who, you know, stole Miranda back in the day), has been warning Bianca this might turn ugly and Bianca's been saying Reese isn't like that. This episode proved Marissa right since this scenario was set up so the Reese would have physical custody of the kids and force the divorce proceedings to take place in France where she'd have more of a chance in court. Now, I don't like this storyline. I think it's painting Reese as a villain and it seems wildly OOC for the woman we met back in 2009.
But here's the thing, if they're going this way Reese has no chance for winning custody. She didn't officially adopt Gabrielle or Miranda and Miranda, in particular, wouldn't be applicable at all given her age when Bianca got into a relationship with Reese in the first place. Also, like I said, Bianca's been on the show for what, eight or nine months since the recast, and the kids have been there all this time and Reese hasn't gone to see them.
SOOOO.... yeah. It's shitty and stupid and I wish they weren't doing this storyline but they are.
Here comes the part where Bianca/Reese fans will be irritated with me. There are spoilers that supposedly in May there will be a new love interest for Bianca. At first they said it would be an former love coming back as a recast. I thought, oh, they'll recast Maggie or Lena. Neat. Then came spoilers that it would be Marissa.
I grimaced at the latter. For a long time I saw Marissa's character as a pale and more boring version of Babe and I saw no point to her, wondering WTF they even bothered to recast her when they didn't renew her actress' contract. Then these scenes dealing with the divorce aired and I realized that Nu!Bianca and Nu!Marissa actually have chemistry and you know, the reason behind the recast makes so much sense. Certainly original recipe Marissa couldn't have pulled off a realistic relationship with Bianca. They had absolutely no hint of any sparks but this recast? Yeah, she can work it. Big time.
Maybe it's my soap fan in overdrive but the way Bianca and Marissa bicker along with the opposing personalities they've given Marissa with the recast they seem like prime material for a new couple. There's the fact that Bianca is hopeful and optimistic and sees the best in people and Marissa is more pragmatic and cynical and, well, it's a nice balance they have between them. Also, the wardrobe for Nu!Marissa is sexy professional vs. frumpy housewive clothing she used to wear. Then you have Marissa bursting in on Jackson and Erica because "Bianca needs help" and her end line of how she couldn't let "that happen to you."
It just seems like huge couple in the making anvils to me. The way I see this progressing is them falling in love during the bitter custody battle and because of the battle and not wanting Reese to get the upper hand they have to keep their romance or feelings a secret. Maybe denying their feelings even exist to each other or just having to hide their relationship. Of course, eventually they'll slip up and maybe get caught in a tryst which will risk Bianca's chances in the custody battle so Marissa has to step down as her attorney and Jackson takes over.
At least, that's what I think will happen.
Watch the clips of Bianca/Marissa and see what you think but I'm of the belief that this couple might just work and frankly? I would love to see Bianca in another adult relationship. We've only gotten to see her with Reese in that capacity and I wouldn't be opposed to seeing her with another woman at this point. Also, Marissa is the adopted mother of AJ (JR and Babe's son, she was married to JR at one point) so she's clearly good with children and it's nice that she's already an established character on the AMC landscape.

On a sidenote, I hadn't seen the new chick playing Bianca and have to say she's not bad at all. Might have to actually start tuning in to AMC. Thanks for the heads up and the vids. :)

I'm sure if this storyline goes the way I think it will I'll be posting more videos of the two of them in the future.

At this point I don't really care about the whole Reese/Bianca (or Maggie/Bianca, or Bianca/Lena, etc...) thing. I wanted to get mad when it happened, but, I kind of felt like it would have been wasted energy. When you sign up to watch a soap you can't complain when the storyline goes Soapy. At then end of the day I'm happy there was a small window of time where there was a happy lesbian couple, with really good chemistry, who were actually physically affectionate, on Daytime TV. If that happens again with NuBianca and this redhead, I'll be happy about it too, and enjoy the loveydoveyness, and brace myself for one of them to turn out to be a con artist, or go crazy, or murder someone, or a domestic terrorist, or whatever soap inspired plot device they come up with. Low expections, it's a good way live. ;-)

At least Nu!Marissa has some real chemistry with Nu!Bianca so if they do get together we'll probably see some decent on screen affection. Yay.
